Geography
Everything is Geography – Nothing escapes it!
If you study Geography at NCHS the world is brought to your doorstep. What appears in the news becomes a fieldtrip. Natural Disasters, Environmental Destruction are no longer acts of God or mysteries; you can explain them to your family. Looking at where your new football boots or your latest fashion top were made reminds you of the differences between the developed and developing world. When you go outside, the wind, the rain, the shape of the hills and valleys all make sense because you know why they are!
In the Geography Department weuse the latest resources to bring the subject to life. There will be opportunities to develop some key skills for the world of work; investigating, problem solving, teamwork, use of ICT, research skills, written and oral presentation skills.
Programmes of study consist of:
Y7 - My Personal Geography, Weather, River Basins and Flooding, Development, Map Skills
Y8 - Waste and Recycling, Economic Activities, Energy Resources, Population
Y9 - The Amazon Rainforest, Climate, Tourism, Plate Tectonics
At GCSE you will build on the knowledge, skills and understanding covered at Key Stage 3. We use Case Studies to explore how different landscapes have been produced through physical processes and how human activity and vegetation is affected by climate. You will also learn about how people across the world react with different environments and deal with differing constraints and opportunities. This will help you to develop a deeper understanding of different cultures and societies and will make you a more tolerant person.
