File Management and Viruses
Pupils learn about the importance of organising their work into appropriate folders. They are also introduced to computer viruses and learn how to avoid them.
Social Networking
Students learn about the possible dangers of releasing too much personal information about themselves on the internet and the particular dangers of using social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter.
Databases
Pupils learn how to build new databases from scratch and to electronically import data from a spreadsheet. They also learn how to create complex searches on a database using queries and create high quality printed forms and reports from these searches.
Web research
Pupils learn how to consider the reliability of the information they are finding on the internet, so that they become more discerning users. They learn how to construct complex searches in internet search engines to narrow down the number of hits they receive.
Web design
Pupils learn how to use Macromedia Dreamweaver to create a complex website. They have to use a frameset to set up the pages and then complete the content. The site is based around the theme of Brazil and has set headings including: Key Facts and Street children and then students choose 3 other topics related to Brazil to present. The pupils use their web research skills to research information and pictures they think are relevant to these set headings.
Spreadsheets including problem solving skills
Pupils build on their skills from Y7 and develop them further using a Pizza shop scenario. They will be given a problem that they have to decide how to solve using spreadsheets and other software to present information to the owner of the Pizza store.
Students learn about what makes a good news story, how to choose and write a news story and then present it by creating a podcast. They have to write the script, record it and put appropriate music backing behind the speech. Some students will go on to take part in the BBC Schools News Report Day in which they become news reporters for the day and create their own news reports in written, audio and video formats
