The Music Department is the ‘home’ of the African and Brazilian percussion, song and dance initiative ‘Madula’ and consequently is regarded locally and nationally as a beacon school in this respect. It’s success has been celebrated on radio, compact disc, in performance and as the focus of a television documentary ‘Inspirations-Drumming to Success’.

Key Stage 3 work is planned from a unique Scheme of  Work, original to the school and designed for its students. GCSE results at Key stage 4 are excellent, consistently above 90 % A*-C grades and often 100%. The Department offers a full range of instrumental tuition from a team of experienced peripatetic staff and enters students regularly for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music grade examinations.

On the three separate occasions that OFSTED have visited the school they have graded the Department as ‘outstanding’. The Head of the Music Department is the holder of Advanced Skills Teacher status, was a winner of the Midlands teaching awards and a national finalist. The Department empowers, harmonises, beckons and travels and our academic year is littered with visits from acknowledged musical educators and artists.
