The Science Department has a very successful approach to the OCR Gateway Suite of GCSE Science qualifications.

Students study via the ‘Triple Award’ route gaining GCSE Biology B, GCSE Chemistry B and GCSE Physics B or the ‘Double Award’ route gaining GCSE Science B in Year 10 and GCSE Additional Science B in Year 11.

GCSE Biology B, GCSE Chemistry B and GCSE Physics B aim to give students opportunities to:

• develop their interest in, and enthusiasm for, Biology, Chemistry and Physics

• develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods

• acquire and apply skills, knowledge and understanding of how science works and its essential role in society

• acquire scientific skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for progression to further learning.

The ‘Triple Award’ GCSE route provides distinctive and relevant experience for students who wish to progress to Level 3 qualifications

GCSE Science B identifies the activities and experiences students will come across in everyday life, and links these to scientific ideas and their implications for society. It provides the opportunity to acquire the scientific skills, knowledge and understanding necessary for life as a citizen.

GCSE Additional Science B develops the scientific skills, knowledge and understanding acquired from GCSE Science B. It provides opportunities to develop scientific explanations and theories and to develop a critical approach to scientific evidence and methods. It also provides distinctive and relevant experience for students who wish to progress to Level 3 qualifications.
