Curriculum Organisation and Developments

All students at Key Stage 3 learn a Modern Foreign Language.  At the moment this is French but we are planning to introduce Spanish in September 2012. We aim to develop language learning skills as well as a cultural awareness, alongside the language acquisition. The department is keen to try out new technologies and believes in an interactive approach to learning. We are a very close team and share ideas in planning and delivering our curriculum. The emphasis in the lessons is on active learning and fun, whilst being underpinned by grammar and structure.

At Key Stage 4 students follow the AQA GCSE specification. French is a core subject for the majority of our pupils.   We understand the importance of learning a foreign language and the doors it can open for the young person when they leave school.

Accommodation and Resources

The MFL department is situated on the top floor of Block One. All language rooms are equipped with a Promethean interactive whiteboard.  The department has invested in an extensive range of resource and reference materials, which students speak enthusiastically about using.

The school employs a Foreign Language Assistant who is a native speaker of French and who works with small groups of students, improving their speaking and listening skills.

Results

There has been a marked improvement in our Key Stage 3 results over the last few years. Key stage 4 results are consistently in line with national averages.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

The department runs an annual visit to France. This is the school's major residential visit, involving over forty (mainly) Year 7 students.  It provides a wonderful opportunity to practise the language, learn about the culture and traditions of the country and the area visited and to make new friends.
